For that matter, gratitude finds its highest expression in charity. So, be charitable. When you give, you experience a great sense of abundance, which in turn confers greater joy. This is the law of nature: the more you give in charity, the more you overcome greed and discover your wealth, your inner strength and sufficiency. In a parallel vein, attachment is undone by constant enquiry.Ask yourself whether you are really dependent on an object and cannot live without it. If your answer is yes, then do you possess the object or does the object possess you?It must be noted here that I am not at all advocating a total abandonment of objects, for that would of course be foolhardy. Neither am I saying that all desire itself is wrong and unnecessary. That line of thinking is reserved for the rarest among humans – elevated souls who are completely surrendered to the Divine. But in the cat-and-mouse world of intense job competition, shrinking resources and other diverse demands, ambition and desires have a very important role to play. We must only see to it that it is we who create and consume our desires, and not let the reverse happen, where we get created or consumed by them. That is the enlightened, practical approach recommended for those in the workaday world. And that frame of mind is the only conducive starting point for any journey towards true enlightenment.
