Complete victory over the untamed mind—that is, being able to call its bluff and to take pleasure in utilising it as a medium or interface for engaging the world – is possible only with the subjugation of the ego. In other words, the realisation that the Self alone is. Identification with the ego is destroyed by always asking: ‘What is it that I have achieved on my own? How much of this is due to the contribution of others—parents, teachers, family members, friends, well-wishers, even people in other parts of the world, or people who existed before me? What really makes me an individual? What boundaries define ‘me’, the ‘I’, and how have these arisen?” All this questioning must be done on a daily basis, vigilantly, if you wish to get to the root of the ego. Gradually, a sattvic mind, calm and collected, is developed; intuitively and by the Grace of God, it yields knowledge of the Highest Truth. The wild monkey, tamed, becomes a Hanumän within us. And then there is no stopping it from gaining further grace, glory and the infinitely loving gaze of Lord Räm Himself.
