Her face maimed by Lakshman, Surpanakha runs into the heart of the forest to her nefarious brother Khara. The sight of her mutilated face besmeared with blood, enrages him. Learning of the events, he immediately despatches fourteen powerful demons to launch an attack on Lord Ram.Seeing them approach, the Bhagwan instructs Lakshman to take Sita away. The demons rush towards Sri Ram, but the prince makes short work of them. Shrieking with terror and lamenting aloud, Surpanakha runs to Khara. Speaking of Sri Ram’s might and valour, she artfully instills hatred and fury in Khara, inciting him to leave for the battle himself, taking with him his army of fourteen thousand soldiers led by the fierce and powerful General Dushana. The ominous stench of death follows the savage army, as a solar eclipse covers the skies shading all into darkness. As the horde of demons approaches, Sri Ram declares that he will fight the enemy alone. His armour glinting like gold, Sri Ram shone brilliantly like a bright flame in the darkness.Blazing with wrath, Lord Ram releases a volley of arrows decimating the hordes of rakshasas. Fourteen thousand demons lie on the bloodied earth, their dismembered bodies strewn in the dirt. The mighty Dushana now attacks Sri Ram, holding aloft a club resembling a mountain peak, one which is capable of destroying the entire celestial army. Sri Ram demolishes him, severing both his arms with a pair of arrows studded with iron spikes. Quaking with anger, Khara hurls his mighty mace, which is pulverised in the air by Sri Ram’s arrows. He fills the sky with arrows, which are met with an equal number from the lord, covering the sky and veiling the sun. Having inflicted several wounds on Sri Ram, he causes the lord’s armour to fall off. Bathed in blood and burning with wrath, Bhagwan then destroys his chariot and weapons. Uprooting a towering Sal tree, Khara hurls it at Sri Ram but it is obliterated mid-air. Having pierced his monstrous body with a thousand arrows, Sri Ram discharges a mighty shaft blazing with fire, bringing Khara down as foaming blood streams in torrents, out of the many cuts the arrows have made.Hailing the lord for this glorious deed of exterminating the ogres from the Dandaka Forest, and thereby restoring its tranquillity, the sages rejoice.
