If the Ramayan is a celebration of the ideology that truth, justice and righteousness always triumph, the character of Lord Ram, a personification of righteousness or dharma, is at once both inspiring and elevating.Lord Ram is indeed the epitome of all virtues and this is brilliantly illustrated through all his dealings, whether with a friend or foe. Besides possessing immense strength and handsome looks, his attitude, words and deeds also have a distinct beauty about them. Always seeking the company of revered sages and people of moral worth, he never spares any opportunity to listen to their rich advice or discourses on spiritual matters, even if it is during short intervals between sessions in missile training. He is ever tranquil and soft-spoken, not using harsh words even in retorts to provocative speech or taunts. He speaks nothing but the truth and is learned, talented and a valorous hero of exceptional prowess. No arm in the world can wield the bow like him. He is a matchless warrior. Yet, there is no vanity or conceit in him.On account of his affable nature, he is endearing and loves his people, who in turn love and adore him. Being the master of his mind and senses, which serve him like a slave, he has conquered all vices of the mind like anger, jealousy, pride, gluttony, greed and lust. The hero of the Raghu clan gives due respect to holy men. His duties are always of foremost importance to him and this quality shines out in all facets of his life, where he is the dutiful son, the loving brother, the devoted husband, the great friend and a just ruler. In all these roles, he puts others above himself and always acts selflessly.Besides discharging his worldly duties to perfection, he has also mastered the Vedas including Vedic rites and rituals. Realising the value of serving others, he never overlooked service rendered and remained ever grateful even for the smallest good done unto him. He remained free from sloth and was ever alert and active. He was firm in his faith and had an indomitable will. Well-versed in statecraft, he was an able ruler who knew when to hold back and when to give. Above all, he is the embodiment of love and compassion and possesses great respect for life.
