There is really no new year. The year is the same—365 days. We have given a name called a year—12 months, 30 days each month, 24 hours every day. People have given these names and measures. Time is one; it continuously flows. From the future, it hits you and becomes one with the past. It never stays. All others are assumptions—my birthday, mother’s death day, Monday, Tuesday—all this we have decided. Time is one. We label it according to our convenience. Change can come only in us. The moment I change, that is the New Year; let it be September, December or January. It is not the month that decides the change of time, but it is our change. All attempts of leading a spiritual life are to bring about consciously a change for the better. And we have got this capacity to change. There is a difference between man—the supreme, the animals and the plant kingdom. In the lower levels of evolution you are helpless. You are the victim of instincts and impulses of the animal, whose form you are occupying. But once you become human, there is a big change, for now you have got this rational intellect, whose glory is not in understanding the world outside and creating some stupendous equipment of self-destruction and congratulating one another that we are progressing scientifically. That is not the proper way to reap the great benefit of having human intellect, but it gives us the ability to scientifically observe and analyse ourselves..Plough the time with study. Sow the seeds of your own goodness in the ample field of time. Water them with your devotion to the perfect. As the seeds grow, the weeds also shall strike their roots in the same field and raise their heads. Carefully remove them; one by one, uproot the evils from yourself. Protect the bosom from the grazing bulls of sensuousness and temptations, of passions and lusts. And wait—till the virtues ripen and are ready for the harvest. One who is capable of thus making use of time and steps forward in his own inward growth and beauty—that one alone can wait for the New Year of glorious promises, of fruitful expectations, of assured peace and guaranteed success.‘The way that I am living now is a waste of my time, my energies and my vitality! I have to live a more creative life where I create first of all my own happiness and sense of fulfilment and as a by-product I may create happiness for others.’ The day you think thus and decide to change yourself, that day will be the New Year. When you realise your supreme divine nature and decide to live the higher life that becomes the dawn of the New Year.
