‘Vratesh, you are posted to Chennai.’

When my Youth Empowerment Program posting was announced, I was excited to serve in the dynamic Chinmaya Mission centre and schools of Chennai. Yet, I must admit that a small disappointment lingered. As a Chinmaya International Residential School alumnus and someone deeply inspired by the Chinmaya Jyoti Yatra, I had secretly hoped to be part of the Chinmaya Amrit Yatra. I had convinced myself that perhaps my driving skills would find a place there.

But Gurudev had a lesson waiting for me. Seva is not about choosing where we serve; it is about serving where we are chosen.

I immersed myself in new projects and responsibilities. Then, unexpectedly, at the very last moment, Swami Mitranandaji deployed me on the Amrit Yatra.

When I joined the Chinmaya Amrit Yatra, I thought I was signing up for a long drive across Bharat. I expected travel, events, and seva. What I did not expect was that the Yatra itself would become one of my greatest teachers.

Having held leadership positions in schools, universities, sports teams, and various organisations, I believed leadership was about planning, coordinating, and achieving goals. The Yatra revealed another dimension of leadership: adaptability.

Every day was different. We interacted with school children, addressed youth gatherings, coordinated events, participated in cultural programmes, and constantly adjusted to changing circumstances. Plans changed overnight. Timelines shifted. Challenges appeared unexpectedly. Gradually, I learned that leadership is not about controlling circumstances; it is about controlling the mind amidst changing circumstances.

As we complete 175 days of the Yatra and cross 18,000 kilometres, exactly halfway through our 35,000 kilometre journey, every youth we have met reminds us that Swami Chinmayananda's vision is alive and waiting to be awakened. Every ghat we have driven through reminds us that the highest journeys are not measured by altitude but by attitude. Every overtake on the highway reminds us to remain courageous and alert. Every satsang reminds us that transformation begins within. Every coordination challenge teaches teamwork. Every change of plans reminds us to surrender to a larger plan unfolding before us.

Travelling through Bharat transformed my understanding of our nation. Diversity was no longer something read in textbooks; it became something experienced firsthand. Kerala's narrow roads winding through lush greenery, Goa's magnificent ghats, roar of Chatrapati’s name across Maharashtra, Gujarat's warmth and hospitality, Karnataka's disciplined roads, Tamil Nadu's feeling of homecoming, the unwavering devotion of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Odisha's

breathtaking landscapes, and countless highways connecting state after state became part of our daily life.

Hours behind the wheel taught patience, alertness, discipline, and trust. Some drives became moments of reflection, while others became moments of unforgettable laughter.

The car journeys were always lively, with everyone finding ways to cheer one another on. Brahmachari Sudheer Chaitanya's endless jokes could leave us laughing long after exhausting schedules had ended. Somewhere between early morning departures, roadside tea stops, missed turns, navigation debates, and late-night arrivals, fellow Yatris slowly became family.

Yet beyond the diversity of landscapes, there was a deeper unity that became impossible to ignore. Different languages were spoken, different customs were followed, but the reverence for Swami Chinmayananda remained the same everywhere.

For me, there is no single place that stands above the rest because every destination embraced us with extraordinary love.

Some of the most unforgettable moments happened not on land, but over water. Performing the Paduka Puja from fishermen's boats off the coast of Chennai was a surreal experience. Later, carrying Gurudev's Padukas across the sea towards Jaffna, Sri Lanka, and performing Paduka Puja mid-sea felt momentous.

Equally inspiring were the quieter moments: meeting elderly devotees who had personally interacted with Gurudev, listening to stories that carried His living presence, and interacting with freedom fighters well into their nineties.

In retrospect, for those travelling with the Chinmaya Amrit Yatra, it is a moving classroom, a leadership laboratory, a spiritual pilgrimage, and a family all at once. Personally, for me, the Chinmaya Amrit Yatra has been far more than a journey across Bharat. It has been a journey within.
