Raja Pravirchanra Bhanjdeo was the ruler of Gond tribals in modern day Chattisgarh’s Bastar region. Pravir Chandra, the last ruler of Bastar, was born on 25 June 1929 in Shillong. After the death of his parents, the British government anointed him king. However, after independence, when the local governments and other princely states tried to usurp the land of tribals for mining projects, he fought hard against the police and was shot dead during the protests. His valour in protecting the land and autonomy of the Gond adivasis is still remembered by the people.
