Before leaving Lanka, Hanuman thinks it is a wise idea to meet Ravan to assess his power and capability—this information would be extremely valuable in planning the attack. Therefore, assuming a gigantic form, he begins destroying Ravan’s favourite royal garden, the Ashok van. Soon, Ravan gets wind of it and sends his soldiers to stop Hanuman. Hanuman disposes of eight thousand vicious demons known as the Kinkaras and a ferocious demon named Jambuli. Ravan then sends his mighty son Indrajit, a powerful warrior. A ferocious duel takes place between the two. Realising it is impossible to slay Hanuman, Indrajit summons Nag Astra and binds him. Hanuman can easily free himself, but he knows it would be more fruitful to remain captive, so that he gains entry to Ravan’s court and assesses his strength.

In Ravan’s court, Hanuman proudly introduces himself as Angad’s messenger and delves into the glories and inexplicable might of Lord Ram. Fearlessly, he tells Ravan that by abducting Sita, he has tied a noose of death around his neck, and strongly advises him to cease his wrong actions and ask for Sri Ram’s forgiveness. Infuriated, Ravan demands that Hanuman be put to death. Vibhishan strongly advises him against it, reminding him that killing a messenger goes against the principles of good governance and would incur condemnation. As punishment, Ravan sets Hanuman’s tail on fire. Enraged by this, Hanuman releases himself from the demons’ bondage and uses his tail to set Lanka ablaze. The effects of Hanuman's actions devastate the people of Lanka. Post that, even the mention of the word monkey would traumatise them.

With great awareness, quick thinking and right preparation, one can guarantee success. Hanuman utilised the opportunity well to be diplomatic, as well as learn more about the opponent. We also see how important it is to have the right and noble intentions. Ravan practised great penances to reach a highly evolved and powerful state; despite this, he was destined for doom because of his wrong intentions.
