Before we go into what a healthy friendship looks like, let's check some of the red flags that we must keep an eye out for.

  1. Lack of respect: Disrespect is one of the most noticeable red flags, especially when it is a common occurrence in a friendship. Hurtful jokes, nasty remarks or sarcastic comments in public are all signs of disrespect.

  2. Gossiping: Talking about you behind your back with other people. Exaggerating or telling white lies about you are all signs that this friend is not trustworthy.

  3. Their way always: If it's always his/her way or the highway, then they may always want to be in control, and they may be only looking at fulfilling their needs while neglecting yours.

  4. Being dishonest: If your friend has been hiding something from you or not telling you the truth then it's a definite red flag.

  5. Emotional manipulation: They make you feel guilty whenever they are not your number one priority or you do something different from what they want. They play the victim so that you follow what they want you to do. They may even make you insecure about yourself by drawing attention to what you think are your shortcomings.

Once we understand the red flags, then we know what a healthy relationship is not.

A healthy friendship is a mutually enriching relationship where all the people involved are respected, cared for and cherished.

  1. Respect: The hallmark of any successful relationship is Love and Respect. If either is lacking, the relationship will not be fulfilling.

  2. Trust: Honesty and transparency in a relationship are the foundation of building trust. A good friend can be trusted.

  3. Well-wisher: A healthy friendship is one in which everyone wants the best for the other. They support and encourage each other to be their better self, and they are always there to help out in case the friend needs help.

  4. Emotional Enrichment: Boundaries, both physical and emotional, are respected. Jokes are enjoyable for all and not derogatory or hurtful.

  5. Conflict Resolution: Conflicts are resolved through direct and honest communication. Open communication, where both friends are given a chance to express themselves and understand each other, is a very important part of the relationship.
