Birubala Rabha (1954 – 13 May 2024) was a courageous social activist from Goalpara, Assam, who spearheaded the fight against witch-hunting by establishing 'Mission Birubala' and driving historic legal reforms to criminalise the practice. In 1985, Rabha's son suffered from a mental health illness. Due to a lack of local healthcare infrastructure, she consulted a village quack healer, who falsely claimed her son was possessed by a witch and would die within days. When her son fully recovered, Rabha realised how deeply dangerous these superstitious fabrications were. This spurred her to mobilise local tribal women to combat social evils, initially forming the Thakurvilla Mahila Samiti. Her decades of dedicated advocacy transformed the lives of countless vulnerable women and established her as a champion of social justice.
