Beyond the Record

At the 2026 Federation Cup in Ranchi, Indian athletics witnessed a historic moment. Twenty-two-year-old sprinter Vishal TK completed the 400m race in an incredible 44.98 seconds, becoming the first Indian ever to break the 45-second barrier. In the process, he surpassed a benchmark that had been associated with the legendary Milkha Singh for decades. As Indians, we celebrate such achievements because they show us what is possible. But when I read about Vishal's record-breaking run, it reminded me of something Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda often said about goal setting.Gurudev would encourage us to set goals so high that we may never actually reach them. At first, this sounds strange. Why would anyone set a goal they cannot reach? Gurudev explained that reaching the goal is not the most important thing. What is important is the effort we put in, the discipline we develop, the obstacles we overcome, and the transformation we undergo while striving towards that goal. If we think about it, Vishal's achievement was not created in 44.98 seconds. It was created over years of training, sacrifice, failures, injuries, self-doubt, and perseverance. The stopwatch only measured the race. It could not measure the countless hours of effort that went into making that race possible. Sports give us many examples of why Gurudev's teaching is so relevant. Over the years, India has produced several talented athletes who showed great promise and even achieved significant success. Yet some of them disappeared from the sporting scene soon after a major victory. Sometimes, when the goal is only a medal, a trophy, or a record, the journey ends once that target is achieved. The truly great athletes see things differently. For them, every achievement is just another step forward. Success is not the destination; it is a milestone. They continue to push themselves, learn, improve, and grow. That is why Vishal's record is inspiring, not just because he broke a barrier, but because he dared to chase something that many thought was impossible. For years, the 45-second mark seemed out of reach for Indian athletics. Yet he continued to strive towards it and eventually achieved it.The bigger question now is: What next?.Hopefully, this is not where the journey ends. We hope that Vishal continues to strive for a goal that is still too high to reach. Whether it is an Olympic medal, a world championship podium, or a new national record, the exact goal does not matter as much as the spirit with which it is pursued. The moment we stop striving, we stop growing. That is the beauty of Gurudev's teaching. A great goal is not meant to give us a moment of success; it is meant to shape our character. It pushes us beyond our comfort zone and helps us discover strengths we never knew we had. Vishal TK's record will be remembered in Indian athletics for many years. But perhaps the greater lesson lies beyond the record itself. It reminds us that success is not about reaching a destination. It is about continuously striving towards a higher ideal and allowing that journey to transform us into better versions of ourselves. After all, records may be broken, and new records may replace them. But the growth that comes from striving towards a lofty goal stays with us forever.
