As we progress further in the exploration of letters by the great thinkers of Bharat, an unmissable inclusion has to be Swami Tapovanam—the forefather of Chinmaya Mission, as he is the Guru and inspiration of Swami Chinmayananda himself. Here’s an attempt at introducing this incredible teacher.Born in 1889 in Kerala, Chippu Kutty—later Swami Tapovanam—was inspired by spiritual values right from his childhood. A brilliant student, he chose a path far removed from formal education, mastering Sanskrit and Malayalam literature via home study. After his parents passed away and he had fulfilled his responsibility towards his brother, he dropped everything from his earlier life and became Swami Tapovanam. For seven years, he travelled widely, from South India to Kolkata, Varanasi, Haridwar and Rishikesh, until he reached Uttarkashi. He lived in a little hut by the Ganga, Tapovan Kutir, which has since become famous worldwide for its peaceful vibrations and silence. When Swami Chinmayananda asked Swami Tapovanam to teach him, it was agreed to—with certain conditions: he would teach each topic only once, no questions asked, and the student had to recall it the next day without making notes. Forgetfulness meant dismissal. Swami Tapovanam taught only sincere students. Life with him was not easy–cold baths, no comforts, silence, strict discipline—but it was rewarding for sure. He demanded precision and reflection. Once, he threw away untouched sweets to teach detachment, teaching his students not to crave them. Every moment with him was a lesson in meaningful living, making him a rare, brilliant teacher. No wonder Swami Chinmayananda turned out as he did!.Excerpts from a letter from Swami Tapovanam from 8 November 1951, reads –.Moderation in conversation is great… Don’t pollute your mind with petty talk of love and hate. Avoid criticism of other people. Spend not much time listening to news and newspapers. Keep away from bad company, for it will upset the mind. Now and then, observe a day of silence. Eat only pure and sattvic food. Never eat too much. Impure or excessive food will put aspirants into difficulties. On some days it is good to eat fruits alone or fast completely. Along with it, it would be better to keep silence….How lucky we are to be receiving this advice, that too, more than 73 years after it was given! Amazingly, if we look at any Instagram account worthy of its following, especially those of coaches and health and fitness experts, we will find some similar advice, but that’s of course mostly for more views, followers, likes, subscribers and income.Swami Tapovanam’s guidance is compassionate to the core. Here’s someone who cares so deeply about the recipient of the letter—and through them, the rest of us—that one feels one simply has to give these a try. After all, he wanted nothing from us other than our own inner well-being, supported by our physical and emotional well-being. We can start with just one of these prescriptions and see how it goes. If it works for us, we can take up two at a time, and then keep adding on. These are tried and tested ways of mindful consumption.
