The Cockroach Trap: Why India’s Youth Will Not Fall For It

Bharat is today at a remarkable moment in history. The nation is rising to be a global economic power, a tech leader, a rising voice for the global south and a civilisation rediscovering its confidence after centuries of colonial oppression. The youth are building start-ups, mastering and innovating new technologies, preserving the cultural tradition, and actively serving the nation. For perhaps the first time in many generations, the Indian youth are refusing to continue seeing themselves as the victim. Instead, they are shaking away the colonial hangover and starting to wake up to see themselves as the inheritors of one of the world’s oldest civilisations and its wisdom. It is against this backdrop that the rise of the so-called Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) appears particularly unfortunate. What began allegedly as an internet joke evolved into a social media movement claiming to represent the so-called ‘frustrated’ Indian youth. Through memes, satire, and anti-establishment messaging, its founder, Abhijeet Dipke and spokesperson, Ashutosh Ranka, built an online following by manufacturing and appealing to disappointment, dissatisfaction and alienation of Indian youth. Cockroach was meant to represent those who felt ignored or overlooked. For a brief period, it created considerable online attention—but it fell just as quickly as it rose. The shield of satire and the pestilential name of the party come from the off-hand and unfortunate comment of the Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, who referred to troublesome youth as “cockroaches” and ‘parasites of society’ during some proceedings in the Supreme Court on 16th May 2026. Within 24 hours, there was coordinated online messaging, a facade of a political movement and outrage, none of which seemed organic..The central problem with CJP was not that it raised concerns of the youth, as democracy needs criticism. The problem, however, was that it appeared to transform cynicism into an identity and grievance into a worldview. Rather than encourage the youth, it tried to identify them as victims. Rather than create responsibility, it amplified frustrations and encouraged complaining. In place of confidence, it cultivated resentment. Some of its supporters glorified chronic online activism and normalised social media outrage as a substitute for achievement. Dipke, residing outside India, instigating the youth of the country to protest while spewing their anger based on their social media understanding of the nation and its youth, needed a reality check. Notably, the trend’s loudest voices, 49% of the online followers from Pakistan, were personally insulated from the consequences of the activism that they promoted. These individuals were far removed from the realities faced by ordinary Indian students and encouraged disruptions. This perception in itself damaged the CJP’s credibility.A closer and consistent look at their ‘movement’ would make any intelligent youth realise that their real objective is not social but rather political. The founders are less interested in solving youth’s issues, such as the proclaimed NEET and CBSE failures, and more interested in cultivating dissatisfaction with the ruling government. The reality, however, is that criticising the government while boasting about their unemployment and obsession with social media is easier than building a nation with over one billion people, awakening them from their colonially manufactured illusions to a new identity of a global world leader, and a proud descent of a rich civilisation is way harder. The party called for an ‘organic’ protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on 6th June 2026. However, the turnout was paltry, and the mayhem was dismal. The loss of fame of CJP can be attributed to the fact that it fundamentally misunderstood India’s youth. But the youth of India are not stupid. We know that there is nothing revolutionary about spending all day online complaining while others are studying, working, creating and building. We are well aware that India’s future will not be built by those who endlessly chase validation. It will be built by those who acquire skills, create opportunities and contribute to society..The founder, spokespersons and other online activists egging the party have a common thread of anti-India, anti-Hindu and pro-Pakistan messaging in the past, with a few even heralding the likelihood of an Arab-Spring-like situation in India. CJP’s message seemed to assume that young Indians could be persuaded to embrace pessimism, victimhood and perpetual outrage. Yet the overwhelming majority chose a different path. They returned to their classrooms, workplaces, startups and ambitions. They chose self-improvement over self-pity, effort over excuses and purpose over online validation. On the other hand, a few of the students out on the streets, joining the so-called CJP movement, brought to light a very shocking phenomenon of the coaching institutions’ mafia. Elements within the coaching industry have an unhealthy incentive to keep students angry, distracted and politically mobilised rather than focused on learning and self-improvement. To see students from coaching institutes being sponsored to participate in the protests was unfortunate and alarming. They deserve a serious probe, public scrutiny and debate. The Bhagavad Gita does not celebrate grievance. It celebrates action. From the Bhagavad Gita to the teachings of our saints and philosophers, the emphasis has always been on duty, self-mastery, perseverance and action. Indian civilisation survived invasions, colonial rule and repeated attempts at cultural erasure because it produced generations of people who chose effort over despair. The story of Bharat is not a story of survival through victimhood. It is a story of renewal through courage. That is why the movement is destined to fail rather than become the transformative force its supporters supposedly envisioned. The youth of India have chosen Bharat over bitterness, contribution over complaint and civilisation over cynicism, making sure that India is always their first.
