Sometimes plans don’t unfold the way we expect them to. This trip was one such journey—where an entirely unplanned destination ended up blowing our minds. Our journey began around five in the morning, on two bikes. I was exhausted and in no mood for an early start, but one energetic, over-enthusiastic friend simply wouldn’t let anyone sleep. Once we left the city behind, the ride transformed completely. Long, winding roads cut through thick forests of the Western Ghats, right through the heart of Kudremukh National Park—a journey that is a story in itself. Kudremukh is a stunning mountain range and national park located in Chikmagalur, Karnataka.A thin mist descended over the hills, blurring our vision as we rode into it. At the park entrance, guards checked our ID cards and noted our time of entry to monitor our exit and ensure we didn’t stop along the way. With dense forest on one side and a deep valley on the other, the view was immaculately breathtaking. As the sun slowly rose, its rays fought through the mist, gently lighting the path ahead. The roads become narrower with potholes making it difficult for two vehicles to pass seamlessly at the same time. This difficulty caused a problem we assumed would be the day’s only hurdle, but alas, we were wrong—there were many more yet to come. While we were enjoying the ride, a taxi driver coming from the opposite direction signalled us to stop. His worried, angry expressions caught us off guard as he asked if we had seen an auto overturn. Before we could process what was happening, another auto arrived at full speed. The driver jumped out, slapped one of my friends, and accused us of causing an accident and fleeing without checking on the victim..We were stunned—the incident hadn’t even crossed our peripheral vision, nor had we heard anything. We repeatedly explained that we hadn’t seen a thing and that we would have stopped to help, regardless of whose fault it was. Slowly, they calmed down. When they realised we were college students visiting the place and that no serious injury had been caused, their anger softened. In a small village where word travels fast, we went from being slapped to being celebrities who had to come visit their land. We were fed, offered tea and coffee, and guided on where to go and what to see. The right words, spoken at the right moment, can dissolve even the hardest anger. We kept moving forward, occasionally waving at random people—by now, everyone seemed to know us. Adventurous by nature, we didn’t mind that the journey looked difficult, with its rough terrain and broken roads. We were the kind who travelled without a fixed destination in mind, so we rode on, completely mesmerised by the views around us.As the path turned hilly and the off-road stretch made riding harder, we decided to park the bikes and walk the rest of the way. With nothing in our stomachs, all we could hear was our own breathing— panting with every step as we climbed uphill..The soft gushing of water striking the rocks caught our attention—it was coming from a distance. Intrigued by the thought of a nearby waterfall, we were determined to find it. What we eventually stumbled upon, however, was one of the most beautiful sights of my life. A small yet stunning temple stood unshaken beside the waterfall, quietly holding its ground. From its location, it didn’t seem like a place that saw many visitors, yet it was impeccably clean, and the idol was truly captivating. Perhaps, if things hadn’t unfolded the way they did, we may never have found our way there - or received her blessings. On the way back, we kept talking about the temple, the location, and the day’s strange twists. At some point, even the bike had enough of the conversation and chose silence—by running out of fuel! But the Devi had clearly blessed us abundantly that day. Pushed and pulled through strange yet impactful experiences, we turned off the engine and coasted downhill - and just as the slope ended, a petrol pump appeared, almost on cue.Trips, like life, rarely go as planned. But when you trust the process and surrender a little to God, the journey has its own way of taking care of you.
