Hanuman’s character is as perfect as his devotion. In his might and prowess, he could well be compared to any of the gods. His strength, valour and intelligence are but a few of the values that we seek to imbibe through praying to him. His ability to transform himself, whether in appearance or nature, shows Hanuman’s ability to adapt to situations and act as the situation demands. However, despite Hanuman’s supreme expertise and heroic qualities, he remains single-minded in his devotion and service to Lord Ram. Even after attaining perfection, he continues his worship of Sri Ram. He provides a shining example of how to pursue all three spiritual paths—Karma, Bhakti and Jnana yoga.Through his selfless attitude, Hanuman exemplifies karma yoga. This path teaches us to serve unselfishly and to purify ourselves through our actions. Hanuman dedicates his actions to the lord, and this bestows him with the strength and ability to fulfil his goal. When we work for a higher cause, the inspiration to achieve will be sustained. In his devotion to Lord Ram, he epitomises bhakti yoga. Hanuman is often depicted with Sri Ram, Sita and Lakshman in his heart, highlighting that love for the lord was at his core. When Hanuman finds Sita, she blesses him with eight great powers, but all he really wants is the blessing of eternal devotion to Sri Ram. This shows the depth of devotion a devotee must have for the lord, despite being offered powers that most people pursue, Hanuman is content in the bliss of devotion that he revels in.Such clarity and ability to follow all three spiritual paths, seeing them as complementary to one another and not exclusive of each other, can come only to a man of perfection. At every point, this hero with a dauntless heart has the astounding ability to elevate and inspire those around him. When he identifies with the body, he sees himself as Sri Ram’s servant. In his mind, Sri Ram is his lord, although intellectually it is clear to him that the spiritual essence in both is indeed the same. His complete identification with the lord forms the basis of his greatness - so powerful and learned, and yet so humble.Ram, who was contemplated upon by Hanuman, the best among the monkeys.
