There are words spoken. There are words that are remembered. And then there are words that become a nation’s heartbeat. Some symbols are created by governments and some by history. ‘Vande Mataram’ belongs to the latter.

On 15 August 2026, as India celebrated its 80th year of Independence, Vande Mataram was heard from the ramparts of the Red Fort for the first time as part of the official Independence Day Ceremony. The year marks the 150th anniversary of the song, one of the most powerful expressions of Indian nationalism. The symbolism cannot be missed. The words that once echoed through streets, alleys, street corners and protest marches against colonial rule are now sung in the heart of a free India.

The song Vande Mataram was written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in the 1870s and later incorporated into his 1882 novel Anandamath. Its central idea was simple yet powerful: India is not merely a piece of territory. She is Mata—mother—and therefore worthy of reverence, sacrifice and devotion. The phrase itself—Vande Mataram—‘I bow to thee, Mother’—gave Indians a new language to express their relationship with their country. During the struggle for independence, it reiterated that the fight was no longer political but personal. During an era when modern Indian nationalism was still taking shape, but before political independence was an achievable objective, the people had to first develop consciousness of belonging to a common nation. Vande Mataram became that consciousness.

The song entered the public nationalist movement in the late nineteenth century. Rabindranath Tagore sang it at the 1896 session of the Indian National Congress in Calcutta, bringing it before a wider political audience. Its influence grew dramatically during the Swadeshi movement following the Partition of Bengal in 1905, when Vande Mataram became a rallying cry for resistance to British rule.

It was being shouted in streets, sung in public meetings and carried by young nationalists who were willing to face arrest and repression. Such was its power, and the impact it created among the people and the resistance, that the British sought to officially restrict its use. The suppression, however, only strengthened its place in the national movement. Vande Mataram did not merely describe patriotism but helped create a culture of patriotism.

The phrase allowed even ordinary people to participate in the movement struggle. One need not be a political leader or a popular figure to say it. One need only believe that the country rightfully belonged to the people, and by chanting the phrase and singing the song, they were part of the resistance too.

Its influence travelled far beyond Bengal. It appeared in nationalist publications and movements across India and became associated with figures and organisations that were shaping the struggle for independence. It had become the heartbeat of colonial India, to the extent that the words were included in the early interpretation of the Indian flag designed by Madam Bhikhaji Cama and later displayed internationally in 1907. Eventually, when India became independent, it was formally recognised and accorded the status of National Song in January 1950.

For a generation born decades after Independence, the freedom struggle can feel distant—contained only in textbooks, photographs and documentaries. But Vande Mataram closes that distance by reminding us that the India we have inherited was once an aspiration of many generations. The young people who shouted those words did not know what an independent India would look like. They could not see the highways, universities, satellites, startups, digital economy or global influence of India that we see today. They simply believed that India deserved to determine her own destiny. That belief is the real inheritance.

But 150 years later, the responsibility has changed. The task before us is not to fight for freedom from a foreign power but to make that freedom meaningful. Patriotism must mean more than a display of emotion alone. It must mean directing youth energy towards building, creating, innovating and contributing towards a better and more powerful India. Just like how creating a free India became the resolution of every person who fought in the freedom struggle, making India a superpower in all spheres must become the relentless pursuit of every individual in India. This year’s fitting theme, Yuva Shakti, connects the memory of the generations that shaped the freedom struggle to the generation that will shape India’s trajectory towards 2047. Vande Mataram!
